SUMMARYLondon 1969 - two unemployed actors Withnail and 'I' (Marwood), decide they need to rejevunate and get away from it all (their cold squalid flat in Camden, drunken binges, crazed drug dealers and mad Irish men), and leave town for an idyllic holiday in the Lake District at Withnail's eccentric uncle Monty's cottage.

REVIEW
A film that has gained true cult status since being released in 1987. This film is written and directed by Bruce Robinson, a huge talent as a director and also in writing fabulous dialogue, which is consistently brilliant throughout the whole film. This is a highly quotable film, with some true gems (see some of the quotes further down). The film follows the adventures of two out of work actors with the opening scene of the film playing to ‘A Whiter Shade of Pale’ by Procul Harum. Right at the beginning of the film we see that life is not in good shape at all for the two main characters ‘Withnail’ (Richard E. Grant) and ‘I’ (Paul Mc Gann).
The character ‘I’ (played by Paul Mc Gann) from the title of the film, is actually named ‘Marwood’ in the film, but there is not much reference to his name, as Marwood in very rare occasions during the film adds a narrative speaking of how he is feeling, making the title of the film ‘Withnail and I’ very appropriate. The film is essentially the experience during those times of Marwood and his friend Withnail.
We can see clearly from the outset of this movie that Marwood in the midst of serious paranoia and depression, and his friend Withnail is not helping matters by only thinking of himself and having very little regard for possibly his only true friend Marwood.
Marwood thinks he and is friend have drifted into the “arena of the unwell” and convinces Withnail to ask his rich and very eccentric uncle if they can spend a holiday in his country house in order to forget all about their problems, get away from their very strange drug supplier, alcoholic binges and… ‘Rejuvenate’.
‘Withnail’ played by Richard E. Grant gives probably the performance of his career, it is a true piece of genius acting, Withnail is very angry against the world, as nothing is going his way and his acting career seems doomed, he vents his anger and constantly rants about everything around him in hilarious fashion.
Throughout the film Withnail also keeps treating Marwood like a scapegoat not realising he is slowly losing him as a friend.
The story really takes off once these two head off for their holiday in the Lake District to ‘rejuvenate’ in uncle Monty’s cottage, only to realise it was a big mistake as there really is no modern amenities in the cottage and they find themselves having to kill their own food, dodge intimidating locals and bulls, all with hilarious consequences.
The whole situation is to turn into an even bigger nightmare when the eccentric uncle ‘Monty’ takes a shine to Marwood and decides to join Withnail and Marwood at his country cottage where things turn very uncomfortable for poor old Marwood.
The ending I believe is perfect for this film, although very poignant, as one of the characters finds success and the other is left all alone and deserted.
SOME OF MY FAVOURITE SCENES:
Withnail demands to have some booze - a fantastic and very funny scene, you really get to feel their predicament when so desperate for booze, Withnail (Richard E. Grant = teetotal in real life) opts for lighter fluid. I love Withnail's hilarious rant, amazing performance.

BAD POINTS OF FILM
Can't really think of any myself. I have introduced this film to a few people and I am glad most of them have loved it, even though some said it was rather slow in places. Something I disagree with but then again everyones taste is different and not everyone has the patience for films to develop.
WHY SHOULD I WATCH THIS FILM?
A cult British movie and one my personal favourite British comedy films. Overall, I found this film a joy to watch as the dialogue is brilliant, and you will be able to quote so many fantastic lines from the movie. How I would love to have the bottle to demand the "finest wines available to humanity" in a restaurant.
Even though this film is a drama/comedy its does deal with rather sad emotional issues, such as alcoholism and the desperation for success by Withnail, while his life is falling apart and the deteriorating friendship of the two characters - Withnail and I.
A true British cult classic about friendship, disastrous holidays, losing hope in your career and plenty of alcohol.
